Missed Connection

Years later, they would both wonder the most dangerous question of all: What if?

Alex would never learn Lucy Vetiver never forgot their kiss under the bleachers on prom night, how six times over the years she had nearly broken down sending him a message on Facebook confessing all only to delete it and "like" his status instead.

Lucy would never know Alex sometimes went there still, to stand under those bleachers in contemplation of futures never come.

She would never go back, stand at the perfect angle to notice a smear of Sharpie left under those beams for her and her alone—I MAY BE MILES AWAY NOW BUT I HAVE NEVER LEFT THIS SPOT.
